Castro and Lovere are located in the north of Lake Iseo.

Castro is a lovely village at the northeast shore of the lake Iseo, located between Riva di Solto and Lovere. It has a population of approx. 1,450 inhabitants.

Originally Castro was a fortified settlement. Most likely the commune was named after a roman “castrum” on a mound called “Rocca”. The historic village is located around the old parish church, dedicated to San Giacomo. The church was built between the fourteenth and the fifteenth century.

Like many other trading communes located at a lakes shore, Castro has a typical shape: a port with buildings originally used for trading goods and small lanes, which wind up the hill. Additionally Castro offers remains of a Welfish tower and at the mouth of the river Borlezza you can admire the scenic beauty of the rock called “Bògn di Castro”.

The small town of Lovere is situated on the northern shore of the Lake Iseo at the entry to the Val Comonica. The commune has approx. 5’430 inhabitants and is a lovely medieval city with antique hidden cobbled streets, old churches and towers and a very spacious and inviting city square at the lakes shore, where you can find very good restaurants, authentic pizzerias and lovely cafés.

Along the shore you can walk to the city port “L’Ora”, where a rowing club, a sail-surf center and an in- and outdoor pool are located. In the evening the port is often used for concerts and other performances. Facing the lake there are some very impressive palaces like Palace Merinoni, Palace Gregorini and Palace Tadini with its Academy of Fine Arts.

Especially worth mentioning are as well the splendid Basilica of Saint Mary in Valvendra (built 1473) and the little church San Giorgio from the 13^th century, which is now presenting itself in baroque style.
